Broadcom launches two new satellite TV set-top boxes, featuring high-definition video

Broadcom, a global leader in semiconductor innovation solutions for wireline and wireless communications, has announced the launch of two new entry-level single-chip solutions for satellite TV set-top boxes (STBs). The BCM7364 and BCM7399 satellite-based live broadcast chips use the Advanced High Efficiency Video Codec (HEVC) standard to assist satellite operators in using existing network infrastructure to provide more HD channels for more users.


"Broadcom's entry-level satellite chipset today will make HEVC popular on set-top boxes," said Rich Nelson, senior vice president of marketing at Broadcom Broadband Communications Group. "By providing a variety of deployment options, Broadcom is able to meet its customers' needs to quickly bring video compression technology to market, and to provide consumers with an efficient and high-quality user experience from entry-level client devices to high-end STB gateways."

As home users around the world consume more and more high-definition video, operators must provide enough bandwidth on set-top boxes to meet this growing demand. The new single-chip solution SoC integrates HEVC compression technology to deliver high-quality 1080p 60 HD video at half the bandwidth required by current standards.
