Microsoft once again caused trouble because of its own decision. According to reports, Windows 10th Anniversary Edition gave up support for two major video compression formats - H.264 and MJPEG decoders, which was originally designed to avoid performance problems when accessing the camera from some Windows applications. However, a large number of users have reported that after the upgrade, some third-party USB cameras are no longer working.
It is reported that the number of affected users has reached as many as one million. They found that their camera was stuck at work, even when using Microsoft's own Skype application. On the hardware side, many well-known camera brands have been affected by problems (such as Logitech); in the software section, many applications and services that rely on these two types of decoders cannot be used normally.
In a subsequent statement to the media, Microsoft responded ambiguously that Windows 10 "has the highest customer satisfaction in all Windows versions." However, the statement does acknowledge that there are some problems with the anniversary edition. "We have seen reports of abnormal behavior triggered by the Windows 10th Anniversary Edition. Engineers and customer service support are investigating these issues one by one, and will provide troubleshooting methods when necessary."
It is reported that Microsoft's Windows Camera team is currently making an official repair patch and is expected to be released in September. Unfortunately, this patch is only for the MJPEG format, and those cameras/services that rely on H.264 may need to wait longer. If you are affected by this issue due to upgrading the Anniversary Edition, you can try to roll back to the first version, and then upgrade after the problem is resolved.
