Semiconductor lights: I can't use them for a lifetime.

Semiconductor lighting is one of the most discussed lighting projects in the world in the last two or three years. If half of the world's incandescent and fluorescent lamps are replaced by semiconductor lamps, if the price of semiconductor lamps can be reduced to the level of consumption of ordinary consumers, then the world will no longer worry about power shortages. Then when will semiconductor lamps enter the homes of ordinary people?
In recent years, the world's three major lighting industry giants - General Electric, Philips, Osram have joined forces with semiconductor companies to form a semiconductor lighting company. Japan, the United States, South Korea, the European Union, etc. have also launched national semiconductor lighting plans.
In line with the trend of the development of high-tech industries in the world, China National Semiconductor Lighting Engineering Coordination Leading Group has also been established. The Ministry of Science and Technology will start the semiconductor industry together with the Ministry of Information Industry, the Ministry of Construction, the Ministry of Education, the China Light Industry Association, the Chinese Academy of Sciences and other industries and places. lighting project.

The magic semiconductor lamp semiconductor technology has triggered the first industrial revolution - after the microelectronic revolution, it is gestating a new revolution - the lighting revolution. With the advent of the third-generation semiconductor material GaN, semiconductor technology is giving another result: the use of semiconductor light-emitting diodes (LEDs) as a new source of solid-state lighting - semiconductor lamps, replacing traditional incandescent and fluorescent lamps.
Li Jian, head of the National Semiconductor Lighting Engineering Coordination Leading Group, cited two figures: at the same brightness, the power consumption is only 1/10 of that of incandescent lamps, and the lifetime is 100 times that of incandescent lamps. "What is the concept of 100 times? With a 6-hour day, a light can be used for 50 years, and you can't use two lights for a lifetime."
Because semiconductor lamps have the advantages of energy saving, long life, maintenance-free, easy to control, and environmental protection, it is generally believed in the industry that, like semiconductor transistors instead of electron tubes, semiconductor lamps are a general trend to replace traditional lamps. Fluorescent lamps can't solve the stroboscopic problem, but the semiconductor lights don't exist. It is the real "green lighting."
For semiconductor lamps, red and yellow lamps are low-end products. These lamps have been mass-produced at present. Among them, China's production costs are the most competitive, and have been used for road lighting, decoration and other special lighting. Low-cost, high-brightness, high-power white light is the high-end product. The United States has recently developed a 5-watt white light, while China can produce a 1.5-watt white light. But the price is too high, more than ten times that of incandescent lamps. Therefore, one of the main directions of semiconductor lighting projects initiated by Japan, the United States, and the European Union is to reduce the cost. They proposed a timetable for large-scale replacement of incandescent lamps for semiconductor lamps, roughly in 2006 and 2007.
The US Department of Energy plans to replace 55% of incandescent and fluorescent lamps with semiconductor lamps by 2010, saving $35 billion annually. According to estimates, in the United States only seven years later, semiconductor lighting can form a large industry of 50 billion US dollars.

The four bases compete for the semiconductor civil lighting. When the Shanxi Provincial Government Deputy Secretary-General Lin Shouzhang recently took over the national semiconductor lighting industry base from the leadership of the High-tech Department of the Ministry of Science and Technology, it means that Xiamen and Shanghai, Nanchang and Dalian have become the country. Four major semiconductor lighting bases.
The Xiamen “Light Source Island” plan proposes to form an industrial scale of 30 billion yuan by 2010, with a total investment of 10 billion yuan. Nanchang of Jiangxi Province proposed that through the efforts of 5-7 years, the base will reach an economic scale with an annual output value of 10 billion yuan. Shanghai predicts that by 2010, it will achieve sales of 10 billion to 12 billion yuan and export earnings of 3-5 billion US dollars. Shanghai will thus become China's LED and optoelectronics industry demonstration zone, semiconductor lamp industry technology innovation demonstration zone and industrial cluster zone. Dalian announced that it will use the development model of private government to strive to build Dalian Optoelectronic Industrial Park into a well-known optoelectronic industrial base in China and the world within two to three years. Dalian Municipal Government has also established “Dalian Optoelectronic Industrial Park” and “Dalian Semiconductor”. Lighting Engineering Base" leading group.
Wu Ling, deputy director of the National Semiconductor Lighting Engineering Coordination Office, pointed out that compared with the international advanced level, China's semiconductor lighting technology is now three to five years behind, the gap is not too big. With China's existing technology base and industrial base, it is expected to pass the stage. The overall advancement will eventually lead to the formation of China's semiconductor lighting industry with core competitiveness.

A huge opportunity "China's opportunity to develop the semiconductor lighting industry is very good." Li Jian analyzed several favorable conditions.
First, China has a huge lighting industry and lighting market. China is now the world's largest producer of lighting appliances and the second largest exporter of lighting appliances. The annual electricity consumption in the United States is 600 billion kWh, which accounts for about 20% of the total electricity. China's population is five times that of the United States. At present, the annual electricity consumption for lighting is only 200 billion kWh, which is only one third of the United States, accounting for 12% of the total electricity consumption in the country. This means that the lighting industry has huge room for development in China. Building a well-off society in an all-round way, the masses have a strong demand for new types of lighting.
Second, China has a certain technical and industrial base in this field. The first LED developed independently by China is only a few months behind the world's first LED. Experts believe that, on the whole, the technical level of China's semiconductor light-emitting diode industry is only about three years away from developed countries. China has initially formed a relatively complete industrial chain from epitaxial wafer production, chip fabrication, device packaging to integrated applications. In particular, packaging has occupied a considerable share in the international market. The red and yellow semiconductor lamps produced in China are the most competitive in the world, and the advantage lies in packaging.
Third, the semiconductor lighting industry is a technology-intensive and labor-intensive industry, which is more suitable for our national conditions, and its risks and difficulties are lower than the microelectronics industry.
Li Jian emphasized: "We must firmly grasp such a good opportunity."

Starting from the urban landscape, Li Jian also suggested that semiconductor lamps should first be applied to urban landscape lighting. Considering the performance-price ratio, the development of semiconductor lighting should first start from special lighting including urban landscape lighting, road traffic lighting, automotive lighting, etc., especially urban landscape lighting, which can be included in the government procurement catalogue, and the best to play the semiconductor light. Low power consumption, long life and maintenance-free. At the same time, we will pay close attention to the development of low-cost, high-brightness, high-power white-light diodes and their systems, so that semiconductor lamps can enter thousands of households as soon as possible. At present, the semiconductor lighting industry has not yet established international standards, and it is necessary to speed up the establishment of semiconductor lighting industry standards and form China's independent intellectual property rights.
