Linear Technology demonstrates the first wireless battery management system in the BMW i3

March 14, 2017 – Linear Technology CorporaTIon, a leading supplier of battery and battery monitoring systems for electric and hybrid/electric vehicles under Analog Devices, Inc. (ADI) this week The industry's first wireless battery management system (BMS) concept car was demonstrated at the E4 Hall 4401 booth at Electronica China. Developed by Linear Technology's design partner, LION Smart, this wireless BMS concept car integrates Linear Technology's highly accurate battery pack monitors and SmartMesh® wireless mesh networking products on the BMW i3. A traditional wired connection between the battery pack and the battery management system. This significant breakthrough at BMS addresses the long-standing reliability issues associated with automotive wiring harnesses and connecting lines in electric vehicles and hybrid/electric vehicles, and simplifies BMS design and manufacturing.

Joy Weiss, president of Linear Technology's Dust Networks® product group, points out: "Lintell's innovations in two key industry-leading technologies enable wireless battery management to achieve automotive reliability levels. Electric and hybrid/electric vehicles New designs are rapidly increasing, and all major automakers are looking for ways to improve the performance and reliability of their battery management systems as they enter the larger mass production phase. LION Smart's BMS design expertise for wireless BMS concept vehicles Showing our product vision."

Automakers face the challenge of ensuring that electric vehicles and hybrid/electric vehicles are both safe and reliable. Linear Technology's road-proven high-voltage battery pack monitors deliver industry-leading accuracy and reliability to create a battery management system that maximizes battery pack performance and lifetime. The LTC6811 Battery Pack Monitor is a complete battery measurement device for hybrid/electric vehicles that measures voltages of up to 12 series-connected batteries with an accuracy of better than 0.04%. Combining the LTC6811 with Linear Technology's SmartMesh wireless mesh network system solves the long-standing reliability problems associated with automotive wiring harnesses and connectors.

SmartMesh's embedded wireless network is field-proven in industrial IoT applications, providing reliability with a 99.999% connectivity in harsh environments through the use of path and frequency diversity. In addition to improving reliability by creating multiple redundant connection points, the wireless mesh network also implements additional BMS functionality. The SmartMesh wireless network allows for flexible placement of battery modules and improved battery charge status and health calculations. More data can be collected from sensors installed where it was previously unsuitable for wiring harnesses. In addition, SmartMesh provides time-correlated measurements from each node for more accurate data collection.

The wireless BMS concept car of the BMW i3 demonstrates the promise of wireless technology to significantly improve reliability and simplify the design of automotive battery management systems while providing performance advantages.

A reference design that enables customers to demonstrate wireless BMS capabilities will be available in the first half of 2017 and includes the LTC6811 battery pack monitor and SmartMesh wireless sensor network.
