JEDEC recently published the first international component-level high brightness/power LED test standard that defines the data, test environment, and program standards on the LED thermal test data sheet. The JEDECJC-15 Committee, in conjunction with the LED industry leader, has developed a temperature performance test standard for high-power LED components, including the JESD51-5, JESD51-50, JESD51-51, JESD51-52, and JESD51-53 in the new JESD51-5X series of standards. Both are in compliance with the existing LED measurement recommendations of the International Commission on Illumination (CIE).
Thermal design is critical in LED general lighting applications to ensure expected LED lifetime and light output. As of today, there is no widely accepted standard for testing hot LED components. This means that some information in the datasheets published by LED products is often questioned. Some aspects of solid-state lighting are heavily reliant on the JEDEC standard for defining, for example, the environmental stress of LED components, mechanical stress, and stress procedures during LED assembly.
The JEDEC51-5X series of standards are applicable to LED manufacturers and LED packagers, and are clearly defined as high-power LEDs, including standard specifications for the LED's data sheets, test environments, and programs. This method is designed to eliminate the ambiguity in the thermal performance of previously existing LED packages or in the marking of LED devices assembled from metal core printed circuit boards (aluminum substrates).
JEDEC Chairman John Kelly pointed out: "LED thermal testing requires clear guidelines. Therefore, the industry leader JEDECJC-15 Committee quickly established standards for JESD51-50, 51, 52 and 53. JEDEC is pleased to provide comprehensive testing requirements for manufacturers. solution."
