How to Uninstall the OBS Plugin [Step by Step]

Plugins are designed to augment and extend the software’s functionality. However, at times, some of the plugins introduce alterations that compromise the software’s stability. In such instances, you may experience lag or glitches within the OBS studio.

So, you need to delete those plug-ins. However, the uninstallation process isn’t as straightforward as we do in other programs. You’ve to carefully navigate to the root folder of OBS studio and remove those plug-ins.

I know you’re still interested in knowing the exact steps for doing so. Well, that’s where this article comes to the rescue. I have outlined in detail the uninstallation process on different platforms. Before we move on, here’s some preliminary information on OBS plug-ins.

What does a Plug-In do In OBS Studio?

A plug-in, in the context of OBS Studio, is a kind of extension or add-on whose primary purpose is to just add a new feature to the Studio – a feature that could improve their streaming experience. Here are some functionalities an OBS plugin can add:

  • Interactive Features for Streamers: Plugins like Se. Live interactive features like a Replay option, Live chat option, Customized alerts, Media requests, and Activity feed for YouTube streamers. This makes the streaming experience more interactive.
  • Enhanced Visual Transitions: The Move Transition plugin animates texts, images, and any source on the scene. This adds a dynamic touch to the streams.
  • Advanced Visual Effects: You may’ve heard of StreamFX. It is a popular plugin that can blur sources, add transitions, create 3D effects, and color-grade effects. It also allows the creation of manual image masks, shaders, and textures.
  • Enhanced Audio Quality: Some plugins like VST FX Suite improve microphone audio and allow multiple different audio modulation options. Some also fix various mic issues and ensure clear and high-quality audio during streaming.

When Should You Uninstall a Plugin?

As mentioned before, plugins are developed to add functionality to OBS Studio, but there are instances when they might interfere with the original settings or inherent features of the software. Here are a few cases when you should uninstall plugins:

Performance Issues:

When a newly installed plugin causes OBS Studio to lag or crash frequently, it indicates performance issues. To get back your seamless experience uninstallation is critical.

Incompatibility:

In some cases, you may download plug-ins that were for specific OBS versions or platforms. You weren’t the targeted user for that. These incompatibility issues lead to operational problems and deletion is the only solution.

Redundancy:

Plugins offering features that are either already available or not required can create unnecessary clutter within the software. They may alter the user interface or the usability of OBS Studio in a way that complicates the user experience. In that case, you also need to get rid of them.

Failure to Update:

Plugins that do not receive regular updates may become obsolete. Or at times a plug-in that fails to update when its new version is available requires uninstallation and reinstallation.

How to Uninstall OBS Plug-in Windows?

Let’s move towards the uninstallation process. In Windows, you may use two different approaches: one via the Control Panel and the second, directly from the Root Directory.

Uninstalling via Control Panel

The Control Panel is a convenient and user-friendly way to uninstall programs and plugins. However, not all plugins appear here, and some might require additional steps for complete removal.

Step 1: Open the Control Panel from the Start menu.

Step 2: Navigate to “Programs and Features” and then “Uninstall a Program”

Step 3: Look for the OBS Studio plugin you wish to uninstall in the list of installed programs.

Step 4: If found, right-click on the plugin name and select “Uninstall.”

Step 5: Next, follow the on-screen instructions to complete the uninstallation process

Uninstalling via Root Directory

The Root Directory method is more hands-on and is required when the plugin is not listed in the Control Panel or when residual files need to be removed manually to ensure a clean uninstallation. This is the most widely used approach.

Step 1: Open the File Explorer and navigate to the directory where OBS Studio is installed (commonly C:\Program Files\obs-studio\obs-plugins\64bit). Paste this path in the file manager and it will take you to the directory.

Things to Do Before Uninstalling an OBS Plug-In [Optional]

We don’t recommend hastily removing plugins without some preliminary steps. Here are two optional steps if you want to be on a safe side:

Create a Backup

During the uninstallation process, you may delete some necessary files and lose your data. To keep everything on the safer side, we recommend you take a backup of all OBS studio files. Here’s how to do so:

  1. Download a compression software. I would recommend using 7-zip software. It ‘s compact, easy, and most of all, free to use.
  2. Exit the OBS Program if you’re currently using it.
  3. Search ‘hidden files’ on the Windows Search bar. Navigate to “Show Hidden Files”.

  1. Cut the zipped folder, Ctrl + X, and paste it into another directory; maybe create a new OBS backup folder.
  2. Again, go into ‘C-drive’, then navigate to the ‘Users’ folder. Find ‘App Data’ and click it. Then, click ‘Roaming’.

  1. Again, you’ll see an ‘obs-studio’ folder. Select its contents and create a zip file. Cut the zip file and paste it into the folder you already moved program data. Rename it as ‘obs-app data’.

Now, you’ve a backup folder and if anything goes wrong you can extract and paste contents back into their respective folders.

Final Words

Plugins are designed to enrich OBS Studio by introducing additional functionality and features. However, there are instances when downloading incompatible or outdated plugins can adversely impact the software’s functionality, necessitating their removal. We have outlined various deletion methods to assist you in addressing such situations effectively.

We recommend you only download the latest and compatible versions of plugins directly from the OBS plugin store to circumvent potential glitches and errors. By being vigilant about the plugins you integrate, you can maintain a smooth and optimized experience with OBS.
