GDC 2017: What is AMD's reintroduction of outdated technology into VR? From Baidu VR

At AMD's annual GDC conference, AMD announced that a once-image technology will be re-applied. AMD created a forward rendering path for Virtual Engine 4.15. The purpose of this creation is to improve the rendering effect and to enable developers to achieve the benchmark of developing VR games: 90fps.

Forward rendering is not a new technology. It was used in early GPU rendering. However, a few years ago, this technique was replaced by deferred rendering because deferred rendering places distorted geometry and lighting calculations in different paths, saving the amount of computation and time required to render all the details simultaneously.

Delayed rendering is helpful for improving screen illumination, but it is difficult to co-exist with anti-aliasing techniques in post-processing. And this frame-by-frame operation technology also requires the system to have higher memory. Therefore, the advanced lighting features that are similar to screen space reflection caused by delayed rendering are not tenable in VR applications.

Forward rendering does not have as many requirements as deferred rendering, but it does a realistic rendering of the instant content it calculates. Forward rendering is a program that occupies less memory. Compared to deferred rendering, the GPU can run it faster and therefore create a better rendering effect (AMD claims that it can provide a 30% improvement). Forward rendering can also co-exist with multi-sample anti-aliasing techniques, which is a great thing for VR experience. This is because fluency is very important when you personalize your experience very close to the screen.

A significant number of AMD developers are working hard to develop the advantages of forward rendering technology for virtual engines. Epic Games and Robo Recall are working together to explore this area. First Contact Entertainment applied forward rendering technology to ROM: Extensions are going to be available in an expansion pack called "Overrun". Limitless Studios is using forward rendering in new VR applications: Reaping Rewards; in addition, Survios (developer of Raw Data) announced that a new game called Sprint Vector will also use the old technology of AMD's counterattack.

"AMD has been committed to bringing VR technology to more people. The forward rendering path in Virtual Engine 4 will go a long way." Senior Vice President and Senior Engineer, Raja Koduri, Representative of AMD's Radeon Technology Team Says, “Anyone who has played Robo Recall will immediately understand how much positive rendering technology can bring to the VR experience. We are working with VR developers to explore the enhancements that this technology can bring.” The ultimate goal is to make beautiful, outstanding games on Radeon Graphics."
