Recently, Alcatel-Lucent announced the launch of a new wireless access network solution lightRadio, which completely subverts the existing mobile and broadband infrastructure and significantly simplifies the mobile network structure. Unlike existing base stations, this product is only the size of a fist and is in the shape of a cube. Not only can it be used alone, but also a large cube can be formed by splicing, so it can support both small cell networking and traditional Macro cellular concept. At present, the flexible features of this product have attracted the attention of top global operators such as China Mobile, France Telecom, Verizon and so on.
Break the traditional base station architecture
lightRadio is a brand-new architecture. It decomposes the base station usually located at the bottom of each cell tower into multiple components, and distributes the functional blocks in the antenna and cloud architecture network. In addition, the system integrates and condenses various cellular tower antennas into a single, smaller, more powerful multi-frequency, multi-standard (2G, 3G, LTE) active antenna matrix device that can be installed on the wire On a pole, next to a building or any other place where power can be supplied.
According to He Qirui, vice president of Shanghai Bell, the lightRadio solution is divided into two parts. The first is the BBU baseband. This solution integrates 2G, 3G and LTE into a single chip instead of the traditional BBU. Instead of the traditional RRH and antenna functions, its length, height and width are all 6mm, and the control part is concentrated in the cloud architecture, completely subverting today's network design and architecture.
For the control of all lightRadio, the concept of cloud is introduced. He Qirui told reporters that all lightRadio will be controlled by the central cloud, that is, SoC-based BBU. If there is interference between the radio terminals, this intelligent central control can coordinate the transmission power and time of each cube, adjust and control them Interfere with each other. Multiple SoC chips are combined into a resource library to support the entire network.
Due to the smaller size of this product, operators can deploy base stations in more secret places, making them look like trees and telephone poles in the suburbs, and hide them in some billboards in urban areas , At the same time, it also reduces radiation and reduces the impact on the human body.
Eliminate blind spots in network coverage
From lightRadio's product performance, this product has three main advantages.
First, enhance environmental protection capabilities. Compared with existing wireless access network equipment, lightRadio can reduce the energy consumption of mobile networks by 50% (Bell Labs research shows that the global base station releases about 18 million tons of carbon dioxide annually). Moreover, lightRadio can effectively improve the current situation of crowded cell towers by deploying small antennas suitable for any location.
Second, bridge the digital divide. By using antennas instead of base stations to reduce the number of base stations, combined with the future development of microwave backhaul and compression technology, lightRadio technology can easily achieve broadband coverage in any location that can provide power supply (electricity, solar energy, wind energy). In places with poor wireless coverage, this small cube can be used to supplement coverage.
Third, significantly reduce operating costs. Thanks to the positive impact of lightRadio on base station, energy, operation and maintenance costs, when it is applied to small cells and LTE, the new solution can reduce the total cost of ownership (TCO) of the mobile network by 50% (Bell Labs estimates 2010 The annual TCO investment of mobile operators in mobile access is about 150 billion euros).
In addition, He Qirui also emphasized that lightRadio will replace the original large antenna and computer room, which will reduce the rental cost of the base station building and the energy consumption will also be greatly reduced. After one of them is damaged, it does not affect the overall operation, but only loses one-tenth of the function or power. It has the ability of disaster tolerance.
Considerable market size in the future
He Qirui introduced that the new lightRadio series of products will be open to customers for trial in September 2011. Alcatel-Lucent is currently co-developing with some operators.
Simultaneously with the announcement on February 15, Shanghai Bell and China Mobile signed a memorandum of understanding to jointly develop the next-generation radio access network (RAN), and this strategic cooperation will make full use of Alcatel-Lucent's lightRadio architecture. Regarding the benefits that lightRadio brings to China Mobile, He Qirui cites the following data.
As far as China Mobile is concerned, base station energy consumption accounts for more than 70% of its overall energy consumption, and air-conditioning energy consumption accounts for more than 40%. If the energy consumption in air-conditioning is saved, plus the room rent, operation and maintenance costs, Significant savings in electricity costs, comprehensively, will be able to achieve 50% reduction in energy consumption and operation and maintenance costs.
All lightRadio will be connected by optical fiber, which will also put forward certain requirements for the operator's network foundation. If there is no optical fiber foundation at all, the architecture will not be adopted. However, from the perspective of the current network construction ideas of various operators, network fiberization has become a general trend, and lightRadio itself uses special compression technology to reduce the number and cost of fiber pairs supporting transmission between the antenna and the central processing of the cloud system. The required fiber resources are reduced to 1/3 of the existing ones, which is a 60% reduction, making it easier for operators to deploy this architecture.
The impact of new technologies on traditional networks is inevitable. Similarly, the introduction of the new architecture of lightRadio must fully consider the compatibility with the original base station equipment. He Qirui said that lightRadio can replace the current BBU, but it is also compatible with it. In the next few years, half of the new or updated base station equipment will adopt this architecture. Combined with the current operator investment in base station construction, the overall market size of wireless technologies supporting the network and equipment will be expected to exceed 100 billion euros in the next 7 years.
