In the early morning of May 10th, Beijing time, Apple is urging the US Federal Communications Commission to abandon its plan to implement UHF spectroscopy for 5G wireless technology, and instead provide these wireless spectrum to enterprises free of charge.
In a document released last week, Apple recommended that the Federal Communica TIons Commission (FCC) retain a large unlicensed spectrum between 95 GHz and 3000 GHz to "encourage companies to carry out a series of innovative businesses and Engineering technology to make full use of these band resources" and avoid "strict supervision."
The FCC is considering how to handle these ultra-high-bandwidth wireless microwaves in the 5G era, which Apple submitted to the agency last week. Apple gave two suggestions in the paper submitted to the FCC. First, it is recommended that the FCC increase the proportion of frequency bands used for unauthorized purposes, which is different from the more preferred licensing model of the agency. Second, it is proposed to broaden the spectrum for unauthorized use.
Apple mentioned that "high-bandwidth operation" needs to be implemented with "20GHz or higher spectrum." At the same time, it is also beneficial to "environmental protection, human security, and manufacturing."
Apple's advice may not be in line with the interests of the traditional wireless communications industry. Although wireless carriers also use unlicensed spectrum like Wi-Fi, their business models and strategies are built around the “purchase of spectrum licenses to achieve their exclusive applicationâ€. In general, wireless operators will lobby to support the opening of more licensed spectrum and less unlicensed spectrum.
