James Smith, Director of Global Business and Technology, National Data Acquisition and Control, said at the Automotive Testing Expo CHINA 2017 that the continued evolution of ADAS not only continues to increase the number and variety of sensors in automobiles, but also accelerates Advancing the sensor-based fusion technology (Sensor Fusion) will greatly increase the complexity of automotive testing, and efficiency and cost challenges will follow.

ADAS test also talks about "Fusion", platform solutions become a trump card
In recent years, the penetration rate of ADAS system has increased rapidly. According to the forecast of CITIC Securities Research Department, the scale of China's ADAS market is expected to reach 200 billion in 2020, thanks to the driving force of policies and regulations to promote the pre-installation of traditional manufacturers and the cross-border competitors of the Internet. Yuan, in which the pre-installation market penetration rate reached 30%.

As a sensing unit, the surround vision system based on camera image recognition and the integrated sensing application of superimposed radar are the hardware core of ADAS. According to Yang Qianhui, senior technical market engineer of NI, according to the International Society of Automated Mechanical Engineers (SAE), L0~L5 The definition of intelligent driving grading, the current automotive industry is still in the transitional stage of L2~L3, and with the higher level of intelligent driving, the distribution of sensors in the whole vehicle will be wider, and the fusion application will be deeper. James Smith stressed: "As the number of sensors increases, only a few new requirements have been developed for individual sensors. Considering the sensor fusion technology required for smart driving, the sensors are synchronized and overall performance at the system level. The test will challenge the test itself and the cost of the test."
Unlike other test vendors, NI's software-centric platform-based test solution has its own unique advantages in ADAS testing:
NI has accumulated years of experience in RF testing and image formation, and as the radar becomes more and more important in the ADAS system, it also makes the professionalism of NI automotive test solutions outstanding;
At the same time, based on the PXI-based flexible test platform, the NI test solution enables micro-second precision synchronization testing, which is why the NI PXI platform can seamlessly connect to sensor fusion testing;
Whether it's RF testing or synchronous performance testing... these advantages are based on NI's unified hardware and software platform, and NI's platform-based testing solutions can also be used throughout the entire automotive test process, such as the previous model-in-the-loop (MIL) , software testing, mid-term hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) simulation, and final vehicle scenario testing.

Therefore, “Neither the test engineer nor the verification engineer, whether it is a lab test or a final vehicle scenario test, the NI solution provides a unified platform where the code can be highly multiplexed, which not only simplifies The difficulty of the development of engineers has improved the efficiency of testing and more effectively controlled the cost of testing," added Yang Qianhui.
Currently, NI's test solution has undergone market validation. As mentioned at the beginning of the article, the release of the new Audi A8, the world's first production model with the L3 autopilot function, has been launched by NI and Audi based on the ADAS test. After implementing radar testing on a solution based on the NI PXI platform, Niels Koch (Component Owner of Radar Systems, Audi AG) spoke highly of NI's energy efficiency in automotive electronics and software testing: "Benefits with the industry's widest bandwidth And the PXI vector signal transceiver with the lowest latency software features, NI helped us better test the autopilot radar sensor and helped us identify problems early in the product design, something that was previously unimaginable."

In view of the rapid increase in the penetration rate of domestic ADAS, the Chinese market has always been the focus of NI's full deployment. According to Yang Qianhui, Geely has cooperated with NI to test the millimeter-wave radar for 77GHz vehicles. In addition to automakers, NI also collaborates with leading universities and research institutions in China, such as Jilin University.
Based on the high-performance computing processing module FlexRIO FPGA, NI also wins new energy vehicle testing
Of course, the changes in the automotive industry landscape are not only auto-driving, but the NI platform-based test solution is not only suitable for ADAS testing. In addition to auto-driving with ADAS as the core, the two major sections of new energy and the Internet of Vehicles are driving the fundamental changes in the automotive industry. At the same time, there is a huge gap between traditional vehicle testing and future-oriented automotive testing.
James Smith believes: "At present, China has surpassed North America to become the world's largest new energy vehicle market, which is very promising." Indeed, with the help of many national preferential policies, new energy vehicles have become a new force in the Chinese automotive market. According to data released by the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers, the sales volume of new energy vehicles in China in 2016 was 507,000 units, a year-on-year increase of 53%. The "Medium and Long-Term Development Plan for the Automotive Industry" announced on April 25 this year also clearly lists energy-saving vehicles as development priorities. It is estimated that by 2020, the annual production and sales of new energy vehicles in China will reach 2 million.
According to James Smith, the three-electric system in the new energy vehicle is the core compared to the traditional car. The testing of the motor and the battery is very important. For example, the motor speed of the new energy vehicle is very fast, probably in the traditional car. About 500 times, and for the battery, special high performance testing is also required. For these two aspects, NI also has actual case stations.
To help Subaru develop the Subaru XV Crosstrek Hybrid, the world's first crossover hybrid, NI has developed a new verification system consisting of a real engine ECU and a HIL system running a simulated engine. During the test, the HIL system can easily simulate complex test scenarios by simply modifying one parameter. Because of the high computational performance required for the entire process, Subaru believes that NI is the only supplier that can meet these needs.
It is reported that Subaru's core system hardware uses the NI FlexRIO FPGA module, a PXI-based controller with an FPGA chip that simulates the model of engine operation. All programs are deployed using NI LabVIEW system design software. Subaru decided to adopt the NI FlexRIO platform mainly because the platform uses FPGA for control and operation, which brings great advantages to the processing performance, and can achieve a simulation rate of 1.2 μs. Most simulation platforms of other manufacturers use CPU execution. The calculation results in a cycle rate of only 5 μs to 50 μs.
"Based on the NI FlexRIO FPGA platform, all Subaru-developed test patterns are automatically executed in just 118 hours, while manual execution of all tests takes approximately 2,300 hours. NI's solution saves customers 95% of the time. ," Yang Qianhui shared based on customer feedback.
Automotive testing integrates the future, "unification" is becoming the industry keyword

Figure 5. NI automotive test solutions fully cover test requirements such as ADAS, new energy, and car networking
Providing a software-centric platform-based testing solution is the core of the NI solution, and "unified" becomes the key word for NI testing solutions, whether it is ADAS, new energy or vehicle networking testing; whether it is the previous model In the ring, software testing, or mid-term HIL simulation, or late vehicle scenario testing, NI unified solution runs through various sub-areas of automotive testing, each process.
James Smith said that even in the V2X space based on communication with different standard protocols, NI can also use the PXI platform to test different communication protocols such as 802.11p, WiFi, and future 5G. Based on NI's modular hardware platform, customers can easily implement different functions by simply modifying the software accordingly.
"Future-oriented automotive testing requires not only NI's technical advancement, but also the development of partners based on NI unified hardware and software platforms and the establishment of ecosystems. For example, we have specially highlighted NI at this exhibition. Partner, Konrad Technologies' Demo for Sensor Convergence Testing," concludes Yang Qianhui: "In the V2X space, NI is based on its own Wireless Test System (WTS) and partner NOFFZ to provide complete wireless communication for HARMAN. Test the solution."
